Deep Tech by Pablos Holman
I read this book because I wanted to know about areas in tech besides software.
Pablos Holman is a hacker, inventor & technology futurist. His argument is that there are many areas of human activity that could change dramatically how we’ll live in the next 100 years. He and his fund are trying to invest in companies that can compress that timeline to 10 years instead.
Examples of this kind of technology are self-steering, electric cargo ships, nuclear reactors that can be serially built, putting solar panels in space and beaming energy down to Earth via radio beams, fusion reactors, 3D clothes-printers, etc.
I didn’t like the author’s writing style. He thinks he’s funny. Also, the constant self-reference in the book becomes annoying (e.g., “I was not allowed to talk about this until now”). But then, these are projects he’s personally involved in. Without his storytelling the book may have turned out dry and boring, even if the salsa dancing anecdotes weren’t for me.
Worth reading. It will expand your horizons on where deep tech stands and open your mind to new possibilities.
