How to Stay Sane

Extremism pays dividends, while sanity is expensive. Extremism gets you engagement, attention, and influence. Extremism get a community of extremists that will defend you.

The problem with extremism is that you end in a world where changing your mind becomes impossible or at least very, very hard, because it’s a synonym of social suicide.

Great article by JA Westenberg on How to Stay Sane in a World That Rewards Insanity.

Three ideas from Westenberg to stay sane:

  • Diversify your information diet in ways that feel uncomfortable.
  • Practice distinguishing between stakes and truth. Just because you’ve picked a side doesn’t mean that you have to defend every argument your side makes.
  • Find communities that reward humility instead of tribal loyalty.

Makes me question if I’m trading long-term growth for short-term rewards in any area of my life.
